The following is a write up from team member Britte Harder:
Members of the LaCrosse FFA Meats team had the opportunity to compete in the National Western Round-Up competition this weekend in Denver, Colorado. Experienced contestants Abigail McGregor, Britte Harder, and Nicole Harder made the trip after being approved by the state advisor to be the team to represent our state at the national contest. Only one team per state was allowed to compete in Denver, and the girls were up against some of the best in the nation. The day before the competition, the girls made the trek to Laramie, Wyoming for a practice contest put on at the University of Wyoming. They were in the cooler practicing for the better part of three hours and later proclaimed that it was the most thorough and informative practice they had had the opportunity to partake in. They also got to experience the frigid Wyoming winter weather, describing their relief to be in the meats cooler, as it was much warmer than the outside temperatures.
The practice paid off for the team the next day when they competed in Denver. Results and awards were announced on Sunday morning. The girls were surprised at their success, due to the fact that they were the only three-person team among teams of four members. Britte earned tenth place individually in both the placing and grading categories. Nicole placed tenth individually in the retail category, and Abigail placed ninth. As a team, the girls placed third overall in the retail category. In the overall competition, Britte placed sixth individually and was offered a scholarship to Colorado State University. The team from LaCrosse made a name for itself at a national level, placing fourth in the overall competition.
